What to check on any label
- The amount of melatonin per piece, tablet, capsule or measured drop.
- Whether it is quick release or slow (prolonged) release.
- Other ingredients, such as sugars, gelatine, flavourings or added herbs.
- A reputable maker — a 2017 study by Erland and Saxena found supplement content ranged widely from what labels stated.
If you take other medicines, are pregnant or are choosing for a child, speak to a pharmacist or GP first. See questions to ask a pharmacist and our melatonin FAQs.
