What is melatonin?
Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an endogenous hormone that is produced in a small part of the brain, the pineal gland. It is located above the midbrain and is no bigger than a pea. This controls the release of melatonin, which directs the body’s day-night rhythm. Light falls in the eyes during the day, reducing the pineal gland’s melatonin secretion.
As a result, there is less melatonin in the blood and we do not feel tired. At night, this light incidence reduces in the eyes and the pineal gland begins again with increased melatonin secretion. Now there is more melatonin in the blood and we are getting sleepy. For this reason, melatonin is also referred to as a sleep hormone.

The biorhythm and melatonin
Melatonin is responsible for the biorhythm of the body. Why is that important? Biorhythm does not mean anything other than our very own internal clock, which is subject to a 24-hour rhythm. This inner clock plays an important role and regulates when we fall asleep and wake up again.
The circadian system
As already explained, the body produces more melatonin in the dark, with light the mirror sinks. For this reason, blind people or night workers often have problems with their melatonin levels. But for all of us, too little light during the day or a bright light in the evening disturbs the normal melatonin cycle of the body.
When your body is exposed to light, a nerve tract is stimulated from the retina to the hypothalamus in your brain. There sits the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which stimulates the pineal gland. As a result, the gland begins to produce melatonin and releases it into the bloodstream.
The precursor of melatonin is serotonin, a neurotransmitter derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Within the pineal gland, serotonin is converted to melatonin. For this to happen, it needs a mediator – a chemical substance called acetylserotonin, which is made from serotonin. In addition to being a precursor to melatonin synthesis, acetylserotonin is also known for its antidepressant, cognitive, and anti-aging properties.
Once serotonin has been converted to melatonin, the two neurotransmitters no longer react with each other. Like melatonin, serotonin also affects your sleep. It transmits signals between the nerve cells that affect everyday brain functions. Many of the health benefits that were previously assigned to higher levels of serotonin are probably due to the fact that serotonin is what makes melatonin production possible.
The pineal gland usually begins melatonin production around 9 pm. Your melatonin level jumps and you feel tired. In a healthy body, melatonin levels remain elevated while you sleep – for a maximum of twelve hours. Thereafter, the melatonin level drops and is barely measurable around 9 o’clock in the morning.
